Underground Electrical Projects
We install buried feeders and circuits for:
- Parking lot and pathway lighting
- Detached garages, sheds, and workshops
- Monument and building signage
- Gate operators and outdoor equipment
- Remote EV chargers
- Irrigation and access-control power
Done to Code, Built to Last
Underground wiring has specific requirements for conduit type, burial depth, and moisture-rated conductors. We locate existing utilities before digging, install the correct materials, and restore the surface when we're done.
The materials matter more underground than anywhere else in the electrical system. Direct-burial cable without conduit, conduit that isn't rated for the application, or splices in wet locations are the three shortcuts we find most often in failed runs — and all three are avoidable at design time for very little cost.
Repairing Failed Underground Circuits
We also trace and repair failed underground circuits — a common issue with older direct-burial cable. A fault locator pinpoints the break between splice points, which usually means one targeted excavation instead of digging up the entire run.
When the fault is repaired, we test the whole circuit, not just the repaired section, because a run that has failed once often has a second weak point waiting. If the run is beyond economical repair, we'll quote a new installation in the same conduit path where possible.
Plan Your Project
Call (202) 521-4835 to discuss your underground wiring needs. Bring photos or a site plan if you have one — knowing where existing utilities and structures sit before the first visit makes the estimate faster and more accurate.
Planning the Route
Every underground project starts with a route decision, and the best route isn’t always the shortest one. Avoiding tree roots, future landscaping plans, drainage lines, and other utilities prevents problems that surface years later. We review the path with you before digging, mark it, and photograph the open trench so there’s a record of what’s buried and where.
Conduit size is worth a conversation too. Sizing conduit one size up costs little during installation and makes future upgrades — a bigger feeder, an added circuit, or a replaced run — possible without re-excavating. For a parking lot or landscape project you plan to live with for decades, that flexibility is cheap insurance.
Utility locates come before any digging, always. We call in the locates early because they’re the slowest step in the process — sometimes taking days — and no underground work should ever start on an unverified route. Hitting a gas or fiber line doesn’t just delay your project; it’s dangerous and expensive. Building the locate wait into the schedule from day one is part of how underground projects finish on time rather than despite it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep does underground wiring need to be buried?
Required depth depends on the conduit type, circuit, and location. We follow the applicable code for each installation.
Do you call to locate utilities before digging?
Yes. Utilities are located before any excavation.
Can you repair existing underground wiring?
Yes. We trace faults in buried circuits and repair or replace the damaged run.
Should I choose conduit or direct-burial cable?
Conduit costs more up front but lets you pull new conductors later without re-excavating. For most permanent installations we recommend conduit for exactly that reason.
Will you restore the surface afterward?
We restore the areas we excavate as part of the job. Complex surfaces like pavers may involve your landscaper, which we'll flag up front.
